Event Description

Students will create unconventional glassware, sculptural objects, and interactive elements that celebrate traditional dining rituals.

Both the glass studio and the dinner table have the power to tell stories of craft, tradition, history, culture, and ritual, serving as gathering places that foster lasting communities. Join us for a week of exploring the dinner table as a site of connection, play, and creative expression, culminating in a shared meal at a sculptural ‘table’ of our own design. Students will create unconventional glassware, sculptural objects, and interactive elements that celebrate traditional dining rituals.

We will experiment with blowing, surface treatment, hot-sculpting, mold blowing, and

cold-working while finding new applications for traditional glass techniques. Expect a mix of demonstrations, collaborative work, and ample time for hands-on exploration in the studio.

Students will leave with both individual works and new approaches to making. Please join us for an unforgettable experience. Now more than ever- it’s time to come together.

Some hot shop experience is necessary.

What to Expect:

  • Hands-on exploration with hot and cold glass techniques
  • Demos on alternative mold blowing, surface treatments, and collaborative processes
  • A mix of individual and group projects
  • Opportunities to engage in a performative and interactive dining experience
  • A culminating installation and shared meal

The hot shop is a loud studio, and can get quite warm. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity and ability to lift 5-10 lbs approximately.  To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the hot shop, without instruction, on Tuesday – Friday from 5-8pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.

Eligibility: Some hot shop experience is necessary. This course is designed for students with foundational glassblowing skills who are eager to expand their material vocabulary and experiment with sculptural and functional approaches. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at ar*****@********ss.org if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
